Why did households hang washing in the sun, and what does science say now?

For most of history there was no clothes dryer, so laundry dried on a line in sun and wind. Households noticed that sun-dried washing came out brighter, smelled fresh, and seemed cleaner. Wash day was planned around weather because a wet or still day meant laundry that would not dry properly. Sun-bleaching linens outdoors was a recognized whitening method long before packaged bleach.

What changed

Home dryers, spreading widely after mid-century, made laundry independent of weather and turned line drying into a choice rather than the default. Science later explained what households already observed. Ultraviolet light breaks down colored stain molecules, which whitens. UVB can damage bacterial DNA over several hours of good sun, reducing germs and musty fungi, though it does not replace a hot wash for heavily soiled items. Light-driven reactions among sun, oxygen, water, and residues on damp fabric produce aldehydes such as pentanal and hexanal, the line-dried scent dryers do not recreate.

Historical Notes

On a dry day, hang washing outside. Put whites and linens in full sun for bleaching and germ reduction, and give them a long stretch of daylight. Hang bright colors and darks in shade, or inside out, to limit fading. Space items so air can move. You get brighter whites, fresher laundry, gentler fabric care, and no dryer energy cost. The clothesline is one of the clearest cases of a traditional practice modern science simply confirmed.
