Soapmaking at Home: A History and a Safe Modern Approach

For centuries, households made soap from animal fat saved from cooking and lye leached from wood ashes. Combined and heated, fat and lye undergo saponification and become soap. How historical soapmaking worked

Hardwood ashes packed in a hopper, with water poured through, produced potash lye. Strength was judged roughly, often by whether an egg or potato floated. Rendered tallow or lard was boiled with the lye outdoors in a large kettle until the mixture thickened. Wood-ash lye usually made soft, jelly-like soap. Harder bars needed salt or a stronger sodium-based lye. The work was heavy, smelly, and often timed to autumn butchering when fat was plentiful.

What changed

Commercial bar soap and standardized alkalis ended most household boiling of ash lye. Modern makers use food-grade or technical sodium hydroxide of known strength and calculate exact amounts for each fat or oil blend. Cold-process methods still rely on the same saponification chemistry, but measured recipes and curing times replace the egg-float guesswork. That precision is what makes finished soap safe and mild when the craft is done carefully.

Historical Notes

Follow a tested cold-process recipe rather than improvising. Measure oils and lye-water precisely, combine them at the temperatures the recipe calls for, stir to trace, pour into a mold, and cure for several weeks. Curing lets the reaction finish and the bar harden. Start with a simple single-oil or well-documented beginner recipe from a reliable soapmaking reference, and use a lye calculator when a recipe requires it. Finished, properly cured soap is gentle. The danger lives in the making.
