Context

Ambrosia began as simple orange and coconut; marshmallows and cream came later.

By the 1950s the salad was a refrigerator showpiece. Use canned mandarin oranges for the period look, or fresh oranges. Chill before serving so the coconut softens.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups orange segments or drained mandarin oranges
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup pineapple tidbits, drained (optional)
  • ½ cup sour cream or whipped cream
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Gently combine fruit, marshmallows, and coconut in a bowl.
  2. Fold in sour cream or whipped cream and sugar if using.
  3. Cover and chill at least 1 hour. Serve cold.
